| Valuable Information for Foreign Travellers |

|
 |
|
Passport: A valid passport stamped with current visa is mandatory for all visitors excluding those from Nepal and Bhutan. You must register with the Foreigners’ Regional Registration Office within 14 days of arrival. We will take care of this service upon check-in. Before making your travel plans do contact the nearest Indian embassy or |
| consulate in your home country.
All Indian consular offices through the world issue visas. If you are a business traveler, you should apply for a multiple-entry business visa, which is only valid for one year. In addition, special visas are issued for trekking, botanical expeditions, and sports and journalism related activities.
You may move freely throughout Munnar and other parts of the country, except to restricted or prohibited areas. |
| |
Customs: If you possess more than US$ 10,000 (or the equivalent in travellers' cheques or bank notes), you have to fill in a currency declaration form. You may bring in up to 200 cigarettes or 50 cigars, and one liter of alcohol, duty-free. It is illegal to bring non-sporting firearms and narcotics as well as gold bullion or coins. The penalties are heavy it the rules and regulations are violated. |

Currency: The units of Indian currency are the Rupee and Paisa (100 Paisa equal one Rupee). Paper money is in denominations of Rupees 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 500, & 1000. Coins are in denominations of Paisa 5, 10, 20, 25, & 50 as well as in Rupees 1, 2, 5, & 10. You may not bring in or take out any Indian currency, except in the form of travellers' |
checks. Moreover, it is not advisable to associate with unauthorised moneychangers for exchanging foreign currency because you run the risk of receiving forged rupees and being cheated.
Money exchanging facilities are generally available at airports and docks, and authorized moneychangers usually display the rates of exchange. All major Credit cards are widely accepted in major hotels, restaurants, and leading shops. |
| |
| Language: English is the lingua franca. In Travel and tour offices, airports and other offices you can easily communicate in English. In most places, you will find the direction signs in English too. The national language is Hindi and it is the most commonly spoken language in the northern zone. However, in the southern states you will find different languages in different states such as Telugu, Malayalam, Tamil, and Kannada. |
